Q: Where did you attend Space Camp as a kid? What location in Alamogordo? ~ Cassidy K.

A: Space Camp, in my case, was not Huntsville. Mine was a hill in Alamogordo, New Mexico, home to the New Mexico Museum of Space History. There was no simulated liftoff. There was a diorama. There was a gift shop with maybe eleven items in it, four of which were rocks.

What Alamogordo lacked in NASA funding, it made up for in unintentional honesty. This was a town whose other major claim to fame was Trinity Site. The message a kid absorbed: incredible things happen in empty places, usually because nobody was around to say no. The desert has a way of telling you what it's about whether or not you're paying attention.

Yes, that's a black eye. It happened during what I've generously been calling a sportsball incident, the details of which I intend to take to my grave.
