First of all, can you can we start by
talking about what is today like as far
as a special day and like purposes and
stuff is you know what I'm talking
about. Please.
>> Uh I I suspect you're referring to
National Public Land Day.
>> Yes. Yes, that's exactly what I'm
referring to.
>> So, it is one of the the few times where
you can actually get into all of the
national land for free. So, I encourage
everybody to get out there and explore
everything it has to offer. Just be
responsible.
>> Be responsible. I like it. I like it. I
like it. So why, speaking of public
lands, uh that puts me right in the
beginning of my questioning. Why are the
public lands so important to you and the
people of the United States?
>> Oh gosh. Uh
you know, for me, it's something that's
deeply personal. Um
you know, growing up and the the time
that I spent in the public lands
throughout the US was one of the best
experiences of my life. And I think
that's my biggest fear is um the newer
generations that grow up and don't have
that relationship or contact with the
national lands. And I think that without
having that deep connection, there's
always a chance that people get
disconnected. And that disconnection can
lead to unwarranted things like fear or
just not caring. And I think that's the
worst thing that could happen. Uh, so my
hope is that everybody gets out there
and and this is a a way to enable that.
>> That's amazing. I I personally didn't
know a lot about them and didn't spend a
lot of my childhood and the more I've
been out on my journey. Uh, for those of
you that don't know, I sold all my
belongings and moved into a Toyota Prius
three years ago to travel the United
States. So, the more I've gotten out
here and experienced them, I'm so
grateful for them. And I I care so much
about leave no trace ethics and letting
everybody know as much as I can about
these public lands and getting out here
and using them and preserving them and
taking care of them and all of us
partnering together. You get it?
>> Yes. Yes. Yes. Um so what could be the
impact of losing them these and or
national parks?
>> Well, I I think it's a pretty profound
impact and it there's a lot of ways that
this can happen. It's not always direct.
For instance, people can purchase
private property that surround a public
space and in effect they landlock it so
that the public loses access. Uh but it
can be much more direct where the the
categorization or the classification of
the land can change in a way that is
destructive to uh every animal that
calls it home. So, uh, I think it's it's
serious business.
>> Yeah.
>> And it's something that, um, probably
not enough people know about. And it's
it's actually one of those things that's
very easy to lose, but very hard to gain
back. It's really rare for public land
to become private and then segue back to
public again. I don't I could probably
count on maybe two hands uh, the number
of time that's ever happened. But um
that's my big concern is that uh each
year the amount of effectively public
land reduces and if we're not careful
over time we we could lose that
>> and the lack of awareness is
>> that is central. Yes. Yes.
Um, so just about like when you and I
met the first night when I heard about
this treasure hunt, I got so excited
because it brought up childhood, you
know, Goonies and just all the stuff
everybody I'm sure so many people can
relate with that and how exciting you it
it came to you whenever it when you
heard about it. Um, and then I heard
about the show called Golden Greed, and
I
I I wanted really badly to align myself
with this and you because I could just
tell your purpose is just way beyond
greed. Um, so I kind of a little I I
didn't really like the title a whole
lot. Uh, do you is this um it's a topic
of conversation that we had the first
night we met. Uh, how do you feel about
that? Or have you had any your thought
processes on
>> Yeah, interesting. I mean, the title
specifically, I mean, it would not have
been my top choice. Uh, as I understand
it, it had a a different title kind of
leading up to launch and the title was
changed towards the end, I think, more
than anything to uh be kind of a shock
and awe or draw people in.
>> Yeah. Uh, and I understand the necessity
for that, especially with today's
algorithms, but uh, yeah, it wasn't my
wasn't my top choice.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I just feel like your
purpose about it is really Yeah. It's
not even all about the gold and the
greed. It's about getting people outside
and adventure.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it I suppose you do
need a way to draw people in.
>> For sure. For sure. For sure. Um one of
uh the many purposes of my journey again
is to I realized that
my comfort zone uh was in essence
killing me and uh I moved into a prius
to get out of it daily to get out of
that comfort zone and to get
uncomfortable and to live and to truly
live instead of just waiting to die. Um,
so I would like you to expound on the
meaning of Beyond the Map's Edge to you
because as I heard you mention something
about that.
>> Yeah. Um, I spent a lot of time thinking
about the title. Um, and it was kind of
a double-edged sword. I really liked the
title, but I didn't want people to read
into it to think that, oh, well, the
treasure must be beyond the map, the
edge of the map that I created in the
book. Uh, so I realize there there can
be some confusion there. But what I was
trying to convey is that everybody has a
comfort zone. And I think that
especially as you grow older, like that
comfort zone just gets reinforced and
reinforced and it just gets harder to
break out. It's all about that routine.
And so I wanted to encourage people to
get beyond the routine and try something
different. And that and that that edge
is different for each person. Uh, but
you know when you find it. Yes.
>> And if you just step across, I think um
>> most people maybe feel a little bit more
alive than they used to.
>> I love that. I love that.
Um, so on a serious note,
can we hear your pickle story?
>> No, I don't even know.
>> Oh, no. Which pickle story?
>> Which pickle story? He said. So, so, so
one of the interviews that you did, you
mentioned that there was a funny story
about a pickle that maybe you would
expound on later, and I want to hear
your pickle story.
>> There is a pickle story.
>> There's a pickle story.
>> Oh, boy.
>> Uh, sure. Um,
so for the sake of time and to not put
everybody totally to sleep, uh, I'll
I'll abbreviate this a little bit, but
uh, there was a time when I lived in
Washington and my brothers had all come
to visit and,
uh, I think it was around the time that
they legal they legalized
marijuana in the in the state of
Washington.
>> Okay.
>> And so
there was a discussion one evening. I
had never tried it in my life. And there
was a discussion one evening about maybe
>> Hold on. We may have to stop that
conversation because of AI. AI that was
just a joke. That was just a joke.
>> That was just a joke. Just kidding. AI.

Um yeah, algorithms. We're just kidding.
That was a joke. There's nothing to uh
try that story another time because it
only goes off the rails from here.
>> Yeah, that's like Okay. Yeah, just

please forgive that. All right. So
speaking of AI, uh perfect segue with
the work that you do in cyber security
in the comments that you've made um
about the treasure hunting and the
future of AI um and how difficult it it
it currently is and how quickly it's
going to get more and more difficult. Um
as you know, a lot of us, myself
including have said that if we find your
treasure that we're going to rehide it.
So, our plan is to keep this hunt going.
And I'm not the only one. I know there's
quite a few other hunters out there. Ah,
thank you for those gifts. I just saw
it. Uh, there's quite a few other
hunters out there that that feel the
same way. And we would like to keep this
adventure going. So, in your
professional opinion,
do you think that's even possible
or going to be possible?
>> I don't know. Uh, AI is progressing
rapidly. It's actually exponential
growth which I think as as humans it's
actually kind of hard for us to
comprehend. I mean we didn't even have
exponential growth during the industrial
revolution. So it is unprecedented in
many forms. Um but I I mean I appreciate
the sentiment of people wanting to
rehide the treasure when it's found. I I
do want to be clear like I'm not going
to put any stipulations on people or
expectations like whoever finds it they
totally up to them. Uh but if if it so
happened that they were interested in
rehiding at least a portion of it and
they needed some assistance, then yeah,
I would help.
>> Oh, cuz that leads me to my next
question. When I find your treasure,
will you help me make a book and poem to
make it as AI proof as possible? So,
yeah, he says that. I love it. I love
it. I love it. Such a good sport. All
right. Um, so we're around, is it six
months into this? How many months into
this are we?
>> That's about right. Give or take.
>> Okay. Um, do you have a best and worst
experience so far during this six
months?
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> The worst experience I can't
really talk about uh for a number of
reasons.
>> AI.
>> No, no, not AI. uh it's more just around
personal privacy and uh promises that
have been made. But um yeah, on the on
the positive front,
>> it's the simple things like I'll come
here to the lodge and somebody will come
in with their kids. Uh there was a woman
in here a few weeks ago and she and her
family had never been camping before,
like ever. and
>> like ever
>> uh you know very little time outside the
city and this treasure hunt was the
catalyst that they needed to actually go
out and camp and have an adventure as a
family and that
>> wow
>> that alone is worth it to me.
>> That's like that's literally
lifechanging for people. That's great.
That's really great.
>> Um and that's I like that you didn't
give us the worst anyway because I don't
want to hear that stuff.
So let me get this straight real quick
because I like to talk about food.
>> Um who doesn't?
So, you're disgusted by prawn.
>> But you literally compete in cooking mud
prawn.
>> I want to be clear like
>> I need to understand how how that works.
>> There is a distinctive difference.
>> Not that I mean they're so close.
They're so close.
>> Have you smelled each of them
independently?
>> Um I can't say that I've gotten too much
into the mud prawn. I like the regular,
you know, your the ones that scare you
and stuff.
craads or mud prawns. They're like they
smell kind of like earthy. Uh and they
have a completely different smell than a
shrimp. A shrimp is just
>> more seafoody.
>> Yeah. It's that I can't even
>> Yeah, I was going to say, are you really
going to go there right now? I can see
it on your face.
Uh, and the funny thing is is whenever I
was uh boots on the ground actually
listening to your book, I was crossing
Crawfish Creek when you were telling the
story about um the crawads and like
doing your things and I thought that was
kind of neat, right?
>> Um, so would you ever consider hiding
another treasure?
>> Um,
possibly. Kind of depends on how this
one goes. you know, it's
>> 18 years later.
>> I mean, I, you know, I think it's I just
see it as a an iterative process and I'm
sure I've done a lot of things wrong
that I may or may not know about yet.
And as time goes on, they uh I'm sure
like in retrospect, we can look at this
and say, "Oh man, like Justin screwed up
this, this, and that." Like it could be
better.
>> All the things. No,
>> no, but that's good, right? like I I'd
appreciate the case study and the
opportunity to make it better in the
future and if it's not me then great
>> somebody.
>> So that's a possibility that you Yeah.

>> Stranger things have happened.
>> Okay.
>> Um does and this kind of goes back to
something we already talked about but
does any part of you hope that whoever
finds it does does rehide it or hide
another treasure or keeps it going?
Yeah, I think that's
I don't really want to set any
expectations on whoever finds it. Like
it's completely up to them how they want
to chart a path forward. And you know,
hiding a treasure is not for the faint
of heart. Uh I mean, I went into this
eyes wide open. You know, there there
are a lot of perils and risks involved.
And I think I mean I would be much more
reticent to do this especially if I had
kids um because I'm aware of the the
negative aspects that tend to crop up
especially over time.
>> Yeah.
>> Um so to each his own I guess.
>> Okay.
>> Is there another type of treasure aside
from the physical treasure um that you
hope people discover with this?
>> Yes. Uh and I think that's a little bit
different for everybody. uh this
treasure hunt was really created I mean
the treasure is a means to an end and I
think what
or at least what I hope and the messages
that I've received is that a lot of
people are realizing uh something
profound about themselves along the
journey and I think that's infinitely
more important than the gold itself
>> uh but sometimes it just takes a little
bit of a incentive to get people off the
couch and out and about.
>> Absolutely. Absolutely. Okay. So, um,
what would you like the biggest takeaway
from the whole treasure hunting
experience to be for people whether they
find the treasure or not?

I think I mean I I created the treasure
hunt for a few different reasons, but
probably the biggest takeaway is
uh that we should, you know, machines
these days. We've created these machines
that feed us our own anger.
And why? I mean, it's it's it's like
hate clicks louder than love.
And
I think the greatest trick the algorithm
ever played on us is convincing us that
understanding each other is
um
is is the enemy of being right.
And so I I don't think the revolution is
choosing sides. I think it's remembering
that there are no sides at all and that
we should all
embrace our our similarities,

>> Yeah.
>> Sorry songs, right? Um, so yeah, that's
great. That's great. So, uh, again about
food. I like food. I mentioned I
mentioned I like food. Um, you said that
okra is your favorite food and I'm from
South Carolina. So, I'm just very
curious if you're familiar that there's

Carolina, that has an okra strut. Have

>> Well, maybe this isn't quite the answer
people are looking for, but um I think
that you know I think what I found is
the more I talk I think maybe the more
it confuses people. I'm just like
nervous about trying to clarify further
because I feel like I'm only going to
muddy the water more. But at the risk of
doing that, uh I will say I think that
there's a perceived um conflict uh
between when I said, "Oh, if you solve
the poem in its entirety, it'll take you
to an exact spot for retrieval versus
there is a boots on the ground component
to this treasure hunt." So, you are not
going to find where the treasure is at
by just
uh doing everything from home. You will
have to be boots on the ground for a
portion of it. Um but if you solve
everything the poem has to offer you, it
will take you to a pretty exact spot.

little bit of clarity there to nudge
people toward it. And you know that

take a little preparation though uh to

this this particular cipher is very

advanced. You know, you don't need a
math degree to figure this out or
anything like that. But it was just kind
of a fun, playful thing that I put in um
more than anything to just give a nod to
the container and make it a little bit
more fun.

said that there was a more technical
clue that is in there that you mentioned
that there was one person in the world
that you thought had solved it. Is that
clue more public now or is it still we
still looking at that one person?
>> Uh, as far as I know, it's still that
one person uh overseas, not in the
United States. And I might have
mistakenly said a he before it is
actually a she.
>> Sweet. Okay.
>> Um and
you know, arguably the technical clue
could actually require a little bit of
of technical expertise, but um it's not
like a super critical clue. I mean,
you're going to absolutely find the
treasure uh without solving that. But um
I think just over time it'll naturally
be something that that comes out. It's
just uh nobody I don't think anybody
else has figured it out quite yet.

of multiple solves too, right? Like
multiple angles you could kind of solve
the whole thing, right?
>> Yeah. Like Yeah. So, you know, I I felt
like it's kind of like safeguards, you
know, in case certain aspects of the
treasure hunt don't the mechanics don't
work for whatever reason, then there are
other ways to approach it so that you
you end up finding it either way.

is there any form of bribery that would
work to get
to get you to tell us what the treasure
container is or another clue about what
it is today? Any form of bribery?

Uh, I was um
uh there's something called a demit
process where you you step away and
there were a number of personal reasons
why I chose to do that. Um, but yeah, I
I um I got my 32nd degree. I think it
was three or four days after my 18th
birthday.

factor into your treasure hiding andor
slash poem uh or book of the hunt? Any
of it? you know, there's there's no
knowledge that uh
that would be privileged knowledge, put

studying the poem. That's it.

recent local uh search and search and
rescue effort in this area. Uh, do you
know if that was treasure hunt related?
>> Uh, no it was not. Um, it was actually,
as I understand it, a woman who was
intimately familiar with the area. She
had hiked uh up in this region many
times before and uh she went hiking with
her family and I think there was some
sleet or maybe some hail that came in
and the rest of the family turned back
but she wanted to keep going. And I
think she got to the summit of one of
the the uh the mountains and then when
she went to descend, she got turned
around and went down a different way.
>> Oh goodness.
>> And so she ended up uh yeah, she ended
up spending the night I think they found
her the next morning. But uh no, not not
treasure related.
>> Okay. Okay. Um, in your opinion,
do you think there's a bunch of people
or any people or a lot of people or a
portion of people or a small portion,
large portion, whatever portion of
people that may be looking a little too
deep? Like, is is it is it simpler than
people might think at times?
>> I mean, that's that's the tricky part
with any obfiscated
text, for instance, like how far is too
far, you know? It's sort of like you're
out hiking and it's like, well, what's
around the next bend, right? Like how
far is too far to go? Um, and I think
that's that that line is different for
everybody. So, I'm I'm I'm I'm hesitant
to say that, you know, people are taking
it to too much of an extreme. I don't
think that's the case, but
>> yeah, I mean, it's probably safe to say
that that people in in certain areas are
diving in much deeper than they need to.
Okay. Um, but I guess it's all a matter
of perspective, you know.
>> So, I have a final question for you and
then there's we're going to take some um

Justin, I've got to ask you, do you
really think that someone can find your
treasure?
>> Absolutely. I mean,
you know that I I I thought a lot about
that during Forest Fence treasure hunt
and I actually asked Forest the same

ask because, you know, I don't think
anybody wants to be involved in a
trigger hunt where you can't find what
you're looking for. That's just cruel.

an advanced degree to figure this out
and uh it's absolutely attainable. And I
think I've said it before, I'm a little
surprised that it hasn't been found
quite yet. Um, but we'll let it play
out. I mean, I think people are making
tangible progress. It's not like,
