42 names a Guide. Hitchhiker’s is the wink. The American Guide is the one in Mag 42 — the gazetteer a ten-year-old already had. We have not recovered a surviving copy under that exact title, so we do not pin from its list. The clue is: look in the Guide you already own.

How a child puts it together

Buffalo Head is the buffalo. Queen of the Hills is his bride. Ancient gates are the gulch mouth / saddle. Her foot of three is the granite profile (truck’s three humps). Return her face is a short physical rotation until she looks at you. Indian Head / Guardian of Shoshone Cove is the same seeing on a postcard — tutorial, not this hill.
